Before diving into the basics of storyboarding, we have to understand where storyboarding fits into the animation pipeline. This is important as it highlights how integral each part of the process is, and how you cannot start certain steps without completing others.
Before we look specifically at storyboarding, we have to understand the overall workflow of an animated production. Here you can see the 3 steps required - pre-production, production and post-production. Every animated feature or series will follow these steps from start to finish.
Pre-production is incredibly important as it lays the groundwork for the whole project - everything from designs to sound, camera planning and timing is done in this step.
Production is where all the animation happens - the actual artwork that creates the magic.
And post-production is the polish of the production. Compositing, sound tweaking and editing all happen in post. We're going to be looking specifically at pre-production as this is where storyboarding takes place.
