Captions are notes that accompany each panel in a storyboard. This is to add clarity to the actions, but also to communicate any dialogue that the characters are saying, as well as any other notes that may be needed. You can add any type of caption to your storyboard, but the most commonly used ones are highlighted below.

Action Notes

Action notes are extra information to explain what is taking place in the storyboard. Not every panel requires Action notes, but there should be enough so no one is confused by what is going on in the board. You can also include specific shot details in the Action notes, these are detailed in the lesson "Types of Shots".

Dialogue

If there is dialogue, it should be included in the specified box. You can simply copy the dialogue from the script and paste it, or type the dialogue directly in the appropriate box.

Slugging

Slugging is the timing of the individual recorded lines of dialogue against the storyboard.

Notes

This is for anything relevant about the current panel or the scene it represents. For example, the crew working on the scene, required props, ambient sounds, continuity notes, or required equipment to complete the shot.

Other Captions

You may occasionally see other types of captions added to storyboards depending on the needs and type of production.
