Unity and Balance

The picture is finished, you followed the rules, but something still feels off. It lacks unity and visual balance. You can reach unity by using rhythm, which is obtained by the repetition of shapes and colours.

Visual balance, on the other hand, is more an intuitive thing. If you look at the following image and it feels heavier on one side. You will have to add something on the other side to counterbalance it and restore the equilibrium.

After covering numerous guidelines on how to design an environment that will support the story, keep in mind it's not written in stone that you follow all of them. But when you decide to break a guideline, it must be a conscious decision and you need to be aware of the impact it will have on your design. Otherwise the only rules you should always follow are to have fun and to always push your own boundaries.
